Of Freaks and Men (1998)

Pro urodov i lyudey, is one of those simple movies that stun you. Alexei Balabanov sets the story at the turn of the (previous) century, where Johan a producer of underground fetish photography and films gets to involve various middle class people in his peculiar scenarios. We get to observe the degradation of a blind mother, her adopted prepubescent Siamese twins, and one of those annoyingly will-less, naive “maidens”.

Its all done very tastefully of course; the sepia tone certainly adding to the plot’s melancholic atmosphere. The background music, although rare, is hauntingly beautiful and the actors fit to their parts strikingly well ( please note Victor Ivanovich, Johan’s thug, whose smile can give you nightmares).

Its a humorous and fascinating movie, with an intriguing storyline and sublime aesthetics which without being shy manages to keep its mystique.
